Let Them Eat Cake

You have been asking for it, so we are accommodating. We have talked to Curtis and KB, both currently whipping up goodies at the Whitegrass Cafe, and they have agreed to provide some goodies for us too. If we are to offer more than coffee Summer and I agree to assume the mantel of the best just as we have with coffee. Hence the meetings with Curtis and KB. KB will be bringing in pies and brownies and Curtis will be doing soups, scones, muffins, and cookies. The foodstuffs should be available this weekend and we have high hopes. Not only are Curtis and KB cooking for hire, but Sarah, of Abus fame, has baked what might be the most moist and decadent chocolate cake I have eaten in a long time. The cake is available now, but not expected to last long. Not only can you get a caffeine buzz, but now you can also obtain a sugar high!

Auto racing, bull fighting, and mountain climbing...

The Ernest Hemingway quote found its way into conversation this weekend as our new friend Paul leaves tomorrow for Argentina to guide a climb. An always fascinating sport that lends itself to the best stories and conversations. Also it evokes the importance of reaching the summit, whatever that may be. Pushing one's self by will alone, telling the body to shut-up and comply with your wishes, and of course paying with your life if mistakes are made is the essence I take from merely observing the sport. Paul, be careful, return to us in 20 days, and regale us with stories from the top. "Auto racing, bull fighting, and mountain climbing are the only real sports...all others are games. "

Full Moon and Snow

Being greeted by the full moon looming low in the sky every morning whilst driving into Thomas has been a reminder of what I miss by sleeping in. The quiet of morning, especially after a day of heavy snow, is lost under the scrutiny of sunlight. This has been my only hour of respite, as this week has been hopping with local traffic running through our shop and I like where this is going. I believe our friends are steering our menu, I feel the need to add the "Bubba's Red Eye" to the list, thanks Bubba. Bubba's is just like you'd expect, a cup of coffee with a shot of espresso added. It'll put hair on our legs, just ask Bubba. Also, Alden is drinking us out of Chai Lattes, and soon that too will have to be labeled in his honor. Charlie has bestowed our hot chocolate with the new handle of "Baby Sauce." I would be remiss not to mention Mackie's new found affinity for double and even triple espresso shots to open his eyes in the morning. "Double shot of Mackie's Love" ...anyone? Maybe not.

Week One in the Books

The drinks keep getting better and the word is getting out. Thanks to Rob, Melissa, and Alden at Hellbender's Burritos for sending so many our way. Monday saw the Parson's Advocate and our Chamber of Commerce coming in to perform the official ribbon cutting and grand opening. We briefly braved the cold and icy sidewalks to bisect the red, white, and blue ribbon. The moment preserved by the Advocate's owner and obviously its photographer, Chris. The patience of our Chamber members was appreciated, as the ceremony was delayed by a rush of customers. Summer's window work has been drawing positive feedback so I have included a photo.

MLK Weekend

The holiday weekend kicked off great at the shop. It was great having Doc Lambert, Seth, Mackie, et. al. spend a part of their morning with us. Charlie is getting to be an expert at riding the couch for hours on end. Thanks to everyone who resisted the temptation to sit on him. We trust the weekend is being kind to our friends Abus and Bubba at Highland Prospects.

Thomas is getting a little better this winter. HypnoCoffee is open and caffeinating as many denizens as possible. Thanks to all those heros of the morning that trudge through the snow to warm up with us. A special thanks to Anne for the assist on cream cheese building, well done! The coffee, tea, and chai is coming from Larry's Beans in Raleigh, NC and our bagels hail from Fiddle Heads in Parkersburg, WV.
